Republican Todd Akin compares Democrat Claire McCaskill to a dog
Todd Akin, the Republican candidate for senator in Missouri who is infamous for believing the female body has a mechanism to stop conception in the case of "legitimate rape", has now compared his opponent, Senator Claire McCaskill, to a dog who would play fetch for the president.
"She goes to Washington DC and it's a little bit like, uh, you know, one of those dog, you know, 'fetch,'" Akin said at an event on Saturday.
Not a lot of polling is performed in Missouri but the senate race appears to be very tight. Republicans have started to put money back into Missouri, despite Akin's time in the doghouse.
The Republican National Committee chief Reince Priebus, presidential candidate Mitt Romney and many other Republican leaders told Akin to drop out of the race after his comments about "legitimate rape", but the party was unable to call their man to heel.
